This year,
Lent will correspond in large part
to our General Chapter.A good opportunity to live in unity this time of
preparation for Easter.
I think we can re-read with benefit the Hebrew text proposed by the Pope in his meditation for entering into Lent: "Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works" (Heb 10: 24 ).
This way into the desert will lead us to life if we are awake, if we "pay attention" to others and to the Spirit of the Lord. The General Chapter proposes to us this opening up to the entire Mennaisian family, in listening to each other for the good of all. This implies listening, paying "attention to the other," and vigilance to enter the inner promptings of the Spirit.
Lent, which will give us all the opportunity to listen to the Word with renewed interest, will also offer us the opportunity to feel more responsible for others. As Jean-Marie de la Mennais stated it so forcefully, our salvation and that of others are strongly related. This is what the Pope says in his Lenten message: "the other is united to me in a special way, his life, his salvation, concerns my life and my salvation. Our existence is linked to that of others, in good as in evil; sins, like works of love, have also a social dimension. "
I suggest you live this time of Lent in a strong fraternal communion, each and every member of the Mennaisian Family offering to the Lord his/her acts of penance, his/her efforts to listen with renewed vigour to the Word of God, and his/her attention to the needy and his/her gestures of sharing and solidarity, so that the General Chapter may be this great time of communion in the search for God's Will.
