L'AMOUR VERITABLE - THE TRUE LOVE - EL AMOR VERDADERO
A few words on the theme of
love that I am taking from the last major text of the Pope following the Synod
on the family. He talks of Patience (No. 90 and following), referring to the
hymn to charity of the First Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians: "Love
is patient ..." (1 Cor 13: 4) . For the Pope, to be patient, it does not
mean "to support everything." He comments. "The meaning comes
from the Greek translation of the Old Testament where it says that God is"
slow to anger "(Ex. 34: 6) This is revealed, he wrote, when the person
does not let himself be led by impulses and avoids being aggressive. "
Further on, he adds: "If we do not cultivate patience, we shall always
have excuses to respond with anger." But then, how to achieve this
patience? He replies. "Patience is strengthened when I recognise that
the other also has the right to live on this earth with me, as he is. It does
not matter that he be a burden to me, that he thwarts my plans, that he annoys
me by his manner or his ideas, that he is not what I expected "(No. 92).
That's what building a family is, or a religious community. Without patience,
and so without self-control, it is not possible!
